Live updates: US-Russia talks on Ukraine; Trump administration news

As Russia and the United States discuss the future of Ukraine, here’s a reminder of where things stand on the ground.

Russian advances: According to the Russian Ministry of Defense on Monday, troops advanced and took two villages in the Kharkiv region, in eastern Ukraine, and in the Russian region of Kursk, where Ukraine launched an incursion in August and still holds territory.

On Tuesday, Ukrainian open-source intelligence group Deepstate separately said Russian forces had made significant territorial gains in Kurakhove, in the Donetsk region.

But the Ukrainian Defense Force said they had made some successful counterattacks, and stopped Russian forces from advancing deeper into Ukrainian territory. Ukrainian military on the ground confirmed to CNN that the situation around Pokrovsk — an important logistical hub in eastern Ukraine — had stabilized.

Death toll: In an interview with NBC news on Sunday, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky said 46,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed and about 380,000 wounded in the three years of war. An additional tens of thousands have gone missing or been taken prisoner, he added.

According to Ukraine’s Armed Forces, 861,090 Russian troops are dead, wounded or missing in Ukraine since 2022. Russia has not released its own numbers, and CNN cannot independently verify Ukraine’s claims about Russian losses, nor the number of its losses.

Artillery stocks: In January, US officials said stocks of weaponry and ammunition held by Ukraine were stable as administration under former President Joe Biden announced its final $500 million tranche of military aid. January’s aid package included missiles for air defense, air-to-ground munitions and equipment for Ukraine’s use of F-16 fighter jets.
