Scott Jennings, senior CNN political commentator and former George W. Bush adviser, on Tuesday night was called onstage by President Donald Trump during his rally and joked about owning the “libs.”
Newsweek reached out to the Democratic National Committee (DNC) via online form for comment on Tuesday night.
Why It Matters
Trump traveled to battleground state Michigan for the event marking his 100 days in office. Trump won the Great Lakes State, along with all other swing states, in the November presidential election to regain the Oval Office in his race against former Vice President Kamala Harris.
His presidency thus far has been dotted with numerous executive orders, massive cuts across the federal government including entire agencies by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), and sweeping immigration policies.
What To Know
During his speech to the crowd, Trump called up his Deputy Chief of Staff for Policy and Homeland Security Adviser Stephen Miller, Special Assistant to the President and Communications Adviser Margo Martin and Jennings.
“I think he’s terrific,” Trump said before summoning Jennings to the stage alongside him.
Jennings addressed the crowd, saying, “Michigan, we were flying in here today, and I said look at these farms. I got to get a farm in Michigan, because when you own as many libs as I do, you gotta get a place to put ’em all.”
Reacting on X, formerly Twitter, after the remarks, Jennings said, “I got caught up in the moment 🤣”
Jennings has repeatedly come to Trump’s defense, touting his immigration policies and saying Trump’s economic gamble with tariffs could substantially pay off.
“Ignore the noise and execute,” Jennings posted to X on Monday regarding the polls on Trump’s economic policies
Recent polls have shown a steady decline in Trump’s overall job approval and more Americans upset with his handling of the economy and immigration.
Trump has bashed the polling, calling for an investigation into the pollsters.
What People Are Saying
DNC Chair Ken Martin, in a statement sent to Newsweek: “While Donald Trump lives in his delusions, Michigan families – along with millions of working families across this country – are forced to live with the consequences of his dangerous, chaotic, and economy-destroying agenda.”
Martin continued: “Trump promised to keep auto plants open. They closed. Trump promised to bring down prices. They’re spiking. Trump promised a ‘golden age.’ Instead we got the Dark Ages. Thanks to Trump, Medicaid, Medicare and Social Security are on the chopping block so his billionaire friends can get a tax break. Trump’s pathetic display tonight will do nothing to help the families he started screwing over 100 days ago. Michiganders and the rest of the country see right through Trump, and as a result, he has the lowest 100-day approval rating in generations. If he’s not already terrified of what the ballot box will bring between now and the midterm elections, he should be.”
Republican Senator Markwayne Mullin of Oklahoma posted to X on Tuesday: “For 4 years, the liberal media and Joe Biden’s handlers coordinating a massive coverup of an American so-called president in full cognitive meltdown. On Day 100, thank goodness we have President Trump working 24/7 and leading from the front.”
What Happens Next
Trump is heading back to Washington, D.C., after his rally to continue pushing his agenda in his second term. Before flying to Michigan, the president said his focus was on Congress and getting the “big, beautiful bill” passed to cut taxes.
